History of Knitting
Knitting is a method by which loops of yarn are interlocked in a series of stitches using special needles. It is used in a variety of crafts, but its purpose is usually the creation of a garment. While the word knitting is derived from the Dutch verb knutten, to knot, knitting itself originated in the Middle East, most probably Egypt, around 1000 CE. A pair of cotton socks, found in Egypt, date from this time.
Due to their decorative pattern and sophisticated stitching, however, it is clear the socks represent quite a period of development and, therefore, knitting most likely originated hundreds of years earlier. From the Middle East, the technique of knitting spread rapidly. It entered Europe through Moorish-dominated Spain during the Middle Ages, and then America
with European colonists. The oldest knitted garments from Europe date from 13th century Spain, with the first known knitting trade guild established in 16th century France.
Knitting was not a popular hobby until recently, being seen as old fashioned. However, knitting as a hobby has enjoyed an incredible revival within the last generation. The number of women knitters has more than doubled in the last decade. It is also beginning to be discovered and enjoyed by more men. The internet has helped in increasing knitting’s popularity.
From websites that teach basic techniques and patterns, to bloggers and podcasts, there exists a virtual community that is all about knitting. This sense of community among knitters will help foster development in techniques and patterns. It will introduce knitting to a whole new generation and help ensure its popularity in the future.
